Google Talk Not Displaying Currently Playing Music Track as Status Message

I’ve come to find out that my choice in music molds the choices of those closest to me on my Google Talk list. This morning when I turned on Windows Media Player, Google Talk wasn’t displaying my currently playing music track, so needless to say, this sent my following of geeks into an uproar. If your Google Talk application decides that it wants to pull this little stunt on you, you’ve got 2 options. 1. Install or 2. follow the instructions below:

  1. Open Windows Media Player
  2. Click all over while looking for a damn menu (I found mine on the bottom of the Now Playing tab)
  3. Select “More Options”
  4. Click on the “Plugins” tab
  5. Click on the “Background” category
  6. Make sure that Google Talk Music Plugin is selected

If that doesn’t work, repeat the same process, but unselect the Google Talk Music Plugin and save the changes, and exit out of Windows Media Player and Google talk. Then go back in and turn it back on, then open up Google Talk. You should be golden.

  1. The plugin should be listed when google talk is installed. If you don’t see the Google Talk plugin listed, try uninstalling Google Talk then reinstalling it. That may solve you problem.

  2. if u still having problems i might have got a solution.if u run msn messenger ul notice on e background in options theres messenger plugin.(thus messenger7 or above)..
i deleted my messenger and re installed gtalk and plug in came well.the plug in deactivates when pc crashes hense ul need to manually activate it.alternatively install i well with u don have to unistall mesenger.

hope it works fine for u

  3. i hav the supporting music player ie. winamp mediaplayer in my pc and i hav
activated to show the current music track by clicking on it
doesnt show any music track….Can you please tell me how to fix this

  4. I have tried everything you listed. Nothing works. I have uninstalled the Google Talk but don’t have the site reinstall. What now. Who asked for this Google Talk anyway. Media 10 did not have this problem. Is there another way to do this without the Google Gunk!!

  5. You could also try this instead of uninstalling and re-installing.
Open command prompt by right clicking it on the start menu and selecting “Run as administrator”. Then type the following:

    regsvr32 “c:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\gtalkwmp1.dll”

    That should solve it.

  6. U were right sir..after I deleted my windows live messenger..only then was I able to show my music status…Thanx a lot!!!!!!

  7. Well, I’ve installed google talk as an admin. I’ve installed winamp as an admin. I’ve run regsvr32 “c:/Program Files\Google\Google Talk\gtalkwmp1.dll – which was successful.

Yet once I start up winamp and enable show current music track! Google talk locks down and freezes. Then I have to close that, and close winamp. Cuz if I start up google talk while winamp is still running it’ll try to read the music and lock up again from the start.

I have Trillian installed – it has the msn.dll – would that be the same as the windows live messenger?

And I cannot find the “background” tab for winamp. I see preferences, plugins > but no background. Where can I find this please?

  8. Yes..That is right..
    I selected the option 2.
Thank. Now Gtalk can show the current music track message.

  9. Step 1: Go to the root directory of Winamp which is usually in C:\Program Files\Winamp\

Step 2: Select Tools->Folder Options->View (Tab) and uncheck the hide extensions for known file types and click Ok.

Step 3: Now create an empty file (Right click the mouse -> New -> Text document), so the default file would be like “New Text Document.txt”.

Step4: Rename the above file to “winamp.m3u” and save.

Step5: Close Winamp and Google Talk. Now open again and Your Show Current music track status should work like a charm

  10. Thanx a tonn…. It really worked… I’m sooo glad.. tried everything out by myslf bt could nt get music track to be displayed on gtalk…. :)

  11. thank u… thank u… thank u…i am finally able to show my current music track on gtalk…so thank u… thank u… thank u…

  12. Hi all,
For Vista users who do not have the option of gtalk in background here is the solution.
The reason is that media player is not able to search the plugin as gtalk has not put it in the right place because there is a concept of user and administrator install location in vista
If you install as user it will install in /user/App location (somewhere)
from wher wm11 is not able locate the plugin
So the solution is to install gtalk as administrator.
on set-up icon right click->run as adminstrator-> follow normal installation

Add u check the background option of plugin in wm11 you see the gtlak option.
    rest is already mentioned

  13. Do this from the command line

If your Google Talk client crashes when you share your music status with Winamp 5.5, please follow the steps below to resolve the issue:

    1. Exit Google Talk and Winamp.
    2. Click start on your Windows taskbar.
    3. Select Run and enter: [ type nul: >>”%programfiles%\winamp\winamp.m3u” ]
Make sure you use two carets (>>), not one (>).
    4. Click OK.

Note: If you installed Winamp in a different location from the default one, you’ll need to use that location in the command in step 3. Replace %programfiles% with the correct location.

  14. First, you need to use a supported music player like iTunes or Windows Media Player.
    (See ).

You may need to check the Google Talk music plugin checkbox in Windows Media Player; on the View menu, in Plug-ins, Options, Background.

On Vista or Windows 7, you may need to reinstall Google Talk with administrator privileges; this fixed the problem for me. Uninstall Google Talk, save the installation Setup file, right-click on the Setup file, and click “Run as administrator” (or check that in the file’s Properties on the Compatibility tab), and run Setup to reinstall.
