Windows Vista Codec Package – Play AVI, FLV, MKV, MOD, MOV, MP4, MPG and Other Files

Vista Codec Package does not contain a media player. It does not associates filetypes. With this package installed you will be able to use any media player (limited by the players capabilities) to play DVD’s, movies and video clips such as quicktime, realmedia, avi, mpeg, Flv, swf, wmv, etc. Streaming video is supported in most web browsers. By default you shouldn’t need to make any adjustments to enjoy your media content immediately.

Users have the ability to choose what is installed using the public redistributable and after an unattended install, you can select to remove specific portions without removing the entire package. Future releases will recognize previous releases and perform upgrade installations.

I have a question about vista windows media player and mkv files!!!
Im able to see the files but the subtitles don’t appear in the screen
Does any one knows how to solve this?

Do MKV files support subtitles? Might be that Windows Media Player doesn’t support or read the subtitles from the MKV file – there might be a plugin or extension that will allow you to do this.

After I installed the codec package I’ve been able to view the videos but there is no sound. I tried turning my computer’s volume up but that still doesn’t make the video have sound. If someone could please tell me how to fix this problem it would be greatly appreciated.

Can someone take a screenshot of an MKV file playing with subtitles enabled? How does the text appear? Closed-Captioning style? Or can you specify the text style in your player?

I installed the codec package for the WMP 11, and tried to play the .AVI files, and it made me uninstall DivX, and when I tried to uninstall the package I got from this site, now it’s not letting me uninstall. Why?

So I downloaded cucusoft to convert my avi to dvd.. after attempting to convert cucusoft gave an error..I shut down. Now my Avi files dont play help!!!!!

I’ve downloaded the file and it gives me the same error messages as before, please help i’m about to give up on vista. To be the best new os it doesn’t do anything that it should, i try to play windows avi files and it says that it doesn’t recognize the file type. please help i’m at my wits end

Visit the homepage to get a 64bitAddon which enables xvid, divx and DVD playback in Vista’s MediaCenter.

Where is this located? I do not see anything on the home page nor when I search?

I can play everything in Windows Media player now that I installed ffdshow however Vista Media Center doesn’t seem to use the same codecs because I still get the error that it can’t find the correct codec to play the avi file. I have the 64bit OS on my computer.

I am using the Linksys DMA-2100 windows media extender with my vista OS and it cannot play back any of my divx encoded files. I don’t want to have to convert everything. Is there a work around for this?

Isn’t a .vob file a DVD file? Convert & compress that to something smaller… or just play it in Nero or some other program that has DVD capability.

If u want to watch MKV files with subtitles on your WMP you need CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack). U just need to delet every codec on your computer and then install CCCP. After instalatin the “settings” window appears and on second page u need to click “autoload VSFilter (WMP & MCE support) and “reset all settings”. Then click “finish”

and woila…everything is playing/working perfectly with WMP!

I Just bought a Toshiba Satellite A305 and have a bunch of media (music, movies, etc.) on external hard drives. When I tried to play videos it would play the sound but no video. I dnl’d this codec pac and everything works perfect now. thanks for the help!

I’m unable to view avi movies even after the vista codec package install. It installed fine, but I don’t know what to do after that point. I still can’t watch movies in windows media player, divx player, VLC media player. Was I supposed to do anything after the install? all I get are error messages that say i need a specific codec. I have windows xp….is that the problem?

help help,i am getting ready to throw away my dma2100.i cant seem to find how to play videos on it,i cant getting the error saying “file type is not recogonised and cannot be played.the correct codec file is not installed.but i did all sorts of conversions,most of my videos are in .avi.i converted to .wmv still nothing.where could i find this codec file.could someone show me step by step what to do.please help

I have a cpl avi videos that I recorded with a sony super8 cam and converted them with dazzle/pinnacle.I dont have dazzle anymore and have a new computer with vista. The vids are avi. 2 play audio only and the others dontv play at all

Ok, i have windows vista 64-bit. I downloaded and installed k-lite pack. I can play my mp4 files in wmp11 and WMC. they work great. However on my media extender the HP. the avi videos play fine, but the mp4′s that work fine on the pc only show the picture, no sound.

any ideas why that would be when they play on the computer?

Thanks for the update it works find. Now I only have one small problem with Windows Media Center! I can’t seem to change the languages on mkv files from default ones, if they have more then one language. I would like to be able to set my language to English. Right now it plays what every the default language is set to on the file. Being that the secondary language is English it is not playing it. I have Windows Media Center setup that all the language settings on the DVD are set to English (Audio, Menu Features & Subtitles), but still when I play the mkv file it plays in its default. :S I’ve looked for any other settings on WMC but I can’t seem to find if there is any other or where it is. I don’t have the same problem with Windows Media Player. I had previously downloaded and installed K-Lite Codec Pack 4.1.0 Full (klcodec400f.exe) to get it WMP to play mkv’s it works well and still plays well even after this new update. Sometimes one will mess up the other but not in this case (everything is fine). With WMP at the bottom of the screen on the TASK BAR an icon appears when I am playing mkv’s in WMP and leaves me make my language selection. This doesn’t happen how ever with Windows Media Center so I can’t make any selections here! Can you see if you can help?!?! Maybe more people have had this problem as well!! Thank You and for the Update you provided earlier for you help in advance.

I have a weird problem. If have the libraries set up on my Vista PC and Media Extender. I store my vids on a separate storage drive. I can play them from my Vista PC fine but they will only play on the extender IF I play them on the Vista PC first. Example…

1) Media Extender: I select the movie from my library stored on a separate storage drive
2) I get the following error no matter how many times I try to play it. “Cannot Play Video… The file type is not recognized and cannot be played. Either the correct codec blahblahblah… ”
3) HOWEVER, if I then go to my Vista PC, select the same movie and let it play it at least a few seconds, stop and close it, then go back and select the same movie on my media extender and it suddenly work!

Its almost as if it needs to be preloaded on the Vista machine first. This seems an unnecessary step to watch movies on my extender and am trying to figure out why this is happening. Any ideas???? Your help is appreciated.

It seems to work on my flv files in WMP, but the software package has a virus hidden inside which McAfee caught – a worm by the name of zf.gen in renderer32.exe while running msiexec.exe. Hopefully it’s not one of those worms that keep popping up even though McAfee says it’s been removed…

I Have Vista Home Premium. I have installed several different codecs in my system. I still can’t play Video TS Files using Vista’s Media Center say’s there’s no Files found. I used to use Win XP Media Center and it played them fine. Does anyone have any input on this I would greatly appreciate it.

try using KMPlayer. it has a problem of installing alryt but showing it didint install well.. install it.. and complete it. play the avi files and other mkv files in it right click on the files and select them open with ….
it shld wrk fine.
