GMC Yukon Hybrid – Does the GMC Yukon Hybrid Gas Mileage Justify the Price

After seeing the success that Ford and Toyota have had with small SUVs, the Escape and the Highlander, respectively, GMC has now released a hybrid version of a full size SUV – The GMC Yukon Hybrid. So here is my question – Does the difference in gas mileage make the escalated price worth it? The standard GMC Yukon gets gas mileage of 14 city/20 highway, and the GMC Yukon Hybrid gets gas mileage of 21 city/22 highway. I’ll admit, the 7 extra miles per gallon during city driving would be nice, but only 1 extra mile per gallon on the highway? What’s the point? I suppose the Yukon Hybrid would be a good option for soccer moms who just drive around town all day long dropping their kids off and picking them up, but for anyone with a job or a daily commute, I have to say that the standard GMC Yukon would be the best option… unless you just feel like blowing an extra $10K.

  1. I wouldn’t understand it either if someone purchased a Yukon (hybrid or otherwise) as a daily commuter.

Yes, the Yukon hybrid fits right in with the soccer mom lifestyle – hauling the kids and their little friends to their activities, running her daily errands around town, and keeping up with the Joneses. It also fulfills the purpose of towing the family boat to the lake for the weekend, or dad’s moto-x cycles to the dirt jump track. Many American families use the large SUVs for towing. Now they don’t have to suffer with 12 mpg or less.

With gas at $4/gallon, it won’t take very long to make up the difference between the cost of a non-hybrid Yukon versus the 2-mode hybrid version. Read the following review for more details:

  2. I just bought a 08 Yukon after seeing the prices for the HIBRIDS and Im happy I did.
Think about something, I work in the produce business and I drive from Northern California to AZ at least 2 a month and to spend almost 18K for a HYBRID and only getting 2 extra milles per gallon? I really don’t think its worth it.
GMC should come out with some SUV motor that can make us smile in the city as well on the freeway.

  3. I totally agree Joe. Until GMC (or any other car manufacturer) can make a hybrid that will double the gas mileage of the standard version of the car, I’m not sure that the extra cost would be worth it.

I have to admit though, the Ford Escape Hybrid does have some decent fuel economy – 30 Highway/34 City – I’d like to get that in my Honda Pilot. 😉

  4. What about the concepts in Germany that are now running with water??? I’ve seen them on TV and youtube and they seem to be working, but of course if they come to production it will be chaos before we know it becuase a good percentage of our economy is based on oil.

Face it we need big cars in USA that can give us better gas millage. If the republic of China had 3 times the population of USA and lets not forget that they are allowed to have only 1 child per family! USA famimlies need something biger that compact car.

The reazon I got my SUV was because I travel a lot and I know how important is the safety of my family if anything happens on the road.
If Ford or any other company come up with a family size car that can make me feel confortable and secure when Im with my family for more than 9 hrs on the road, I willbe the first one in line to get it, but not till then I have to keep paying 4.79/ gallon (San Jose California)
