Starbucks Iced Carmel Macchiato Recipe – Has it changed?


For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a huge fan of the Starbucks Iced Carmel Macchiato (Venti… of course). However, the last few times I’ve had one, it has tasted like shit! Honestly, I order the Iced Carmel Macchiato because I have a major sweet tooth. If you’re not going to load my drink with carmel flavor and carmel syrup… is there really a point to me buying it? It really seems like they’ve cut down on the use of carmel flavoring that they put into the drink, and it also seems like they’ve been using a lot less of the thick carmel syrup… that was my favorite part!!! After the drink was gone, trying to suck all that thick carmely goodness through the straw.

Are there any other fans of the Starbucks Iced Carmel Macchiato out there? Have you noticed the same thing? Maybe its just this one Starbucks location that I’ve been going to… I should try another one and see if its the same.

  1. Everything I have tried since Starbucks had their famous 3-hour nationwide meeting/came up with the new Pike Place Roast – which happened about the same time has been AWFUL! I keep going back and trying something again and again and they just keep tasting weird!

  3. Glad I am not alone! I recently had surgery on my jaw and thought maybe it was just me but the Caramel Macchiato is now crap. Like you I loved them and had at least one a day but the last few times I have ordered them (I keep trying) I wind up throwing it out after drinking about 1/4th of it. I was told that Starbucks made a change to the recipe due to the high calorie level of the drink. shouldn’t that be my choice? If you don’t want the calories don’t order it!!!

  4. OH my gosh i agree totally!!! i just found my love for caramel macchiatos over the previous year and this sumer i tried the iced one!!! Yuck it was so gross!!! it tasted like plain coffee with no caramel !!!!! i was truly disapointed!!!!

  5. I don’t know if ANY of you know this, but the only Caramel in the Macchiato is the sauce on top. It is Vanilla flavoring. If the drink tastes off you need to talk to your barista about it. They can add more or less of anything behind that bar to make it taste the way you want.

  6. Umm… maybe you all should stop drinking coffee from a company that is basically the equivalent of McDonald’s? Ever stop to think that you’re paying (through the nose) someone to press a button and churn out your extra chin and thunder thighs, while at the same time deriving no satisfaction from the craft, experience, or ambiance?

    Go to a real coffee shop, let your tongue experience the honesty of a true coffee roaster’s work; not sugary swill concocted by amateurs aimed only for the purpose of taking your money – they know you will come back because your ignorance is their bliss.

    Only dirty hippies hang out in “real coffee shops”. That’s why Starbucks exists… for those of us who don’t want to have to smell the stank of the dirty hippies.

  8. YES! The last few times i have got these they are terrible. It tastes like they are burning the beans too long. I thought it was just the shop that i was going to… but it looks like others are having the same problem. Seriously tastes like a Burnt Fart! Drink sucks now! They need to go back to the old recipe!!!

  9. If you are experiencing a difference in your caramel macchiato, next time you order one, watch your barista make it. I recently learned from a friend who works at a Starbucks, that you have ten seconds to get your shot of espresso into milk or else it “goes bad.” (if out longer than ten seconds, it will become VERY bitter because it is so hot its still brewing itself. I took a shot of both good and bad, not beleiving her and she was right!! the “bad” one was disgusting!) So watch your barista and make sure they are quickly adding your shots into the milk and syrup. :]

  10. what has changed is they have eliminated anything that had corn syrup in it.
    It might be healthy…but there is no sense in trying or buying starbuck anymore. all their drinks have changed for the worse.

  11. I tried an iced caramel macchiato for the first time, and I honestly thought it tasted like garbage. I would have rather had plain iced coffee with cream and sugar. I don’t know what it was, but the after taste just hit me the wrong way. I really really wanted to like it too.
