Xbox 360 Media Center Extender Can’t Connect to Windows 7

After hours of toiling with my new Windows 7 setup and my Xbox 360, I finally came to the conclusion that the simplest solution, that is typically right under our nose is the one that we should probably try first.
I had been unable to connect my Xbox 360 to my PC (which I had just installed Windows 7 on). I tried adjusting settings in my router, in my firewall, opening ports, changing network sharing settings, etc. and nothing seemed to work. After hours of failure, I simply went back to my Xbox and started over. Literally.
I selected the option so “Setup a new connection”. This basically searches the network for a PC that is running Windows Media Center, which my new Windows 7 RC1 machine is running. Immediately, the Xbox 360 found my PC and displayed the 8 digit code for me to input on my PC to link the two.
The problem was that my Xbox had previously been setup with another computer, so when I turned it on and tried to connect to Windows Media Center after upgrading my operating system, it needed to have a new connection setup.
Such an easy fix. No need to change port numbers or any of that fun stuff. I hope this info will help the others out there who may have a similar problem after upgrading to Windows 7.

i am having the same problems, where is the set up a new connection thing ur talking about
bullshit, tried it .doesnt work. 360 is a piece of shit console.
Windows 7 RC (32-bit) works flawlessly with Xbox 360. Info at xbox.com explains removal if you have had linked to other pc.
I finally found out why I couldn’t get my Xbox360 to work with Win7. It would keep failing saying that the game could not start. If your Xbox was previously connected to a XP computer or Vista, you need to delete the “game” in the Xbox memory.
Follow the steps in this document and you’ll be able to connect. Took me forever to figure this out.

Let me know if it works for you.
Thanks! Exactly what I needed.
Cheers, works great now!
did not work at all!!!!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. Holy crap I have spend the better part of 3 days with this doing exactly what you went through. Router changes, installing/removing/reinstalling software, firewall, etc. I remembered the first time I connected it worked seamlessly and I was totally baffled at why it was such a pain in the ass. Occam’s razor perhaps?
Happy new year!
Glad it worked for you guys. Yeah took me forever to figure it out.
I’ve spent HOURS trying to fix this problem while totally missing the obvious. Thanks for this post!
hello guyz… I still have some trouble with connecting.. PC says that it has connected and I can find the XBOX 360 Media Center Extender in Media Center settings and it says it s ready…. Xbox says the same if I try connection test.. Everything is “perfect” but when I try to connect on XBOX it shows the screen “Windows Media Center” and it s written there “contacting….” which takes something about 5 mins and then I hear some nice sound (like it was succesful) but then it says “the xbox 360 could not connect to the windows media center pc. try to shut down xbox and blabla …… )
(
I tried everything… Even the instructions here for deleting “old connection” from memory but it still does the same!!
Please does anyone know what to do?
Thank you veeeeeeeeeery very much

i had the same problem. Go to netwrok connections and try the network test for windows media centre and if it works , go straight to windows media centre and then try it.
Basically I tried several things, but the only thing that worked was the solution found at the following URL :-
[XBOX] HOW-TO fix Windows Vista and Windows 7 SMB Shares for XBMC – XBMC Community Forum
It seems that the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) on Windows 7 is auto tuning, which can cause problems.
For reference I searched the internet for a solution to this issue and trie many things, what I did find is that I made sure SSDP, uPNP Device Host and Windows Media Player Network Sharing service was running under services (You can go to services by typing services.msc in search (Win key + R)
Another way to check if you have connectivity to your XBOX from your PC is to ping the XBOX, now ordinarily you cant ping the XBOX by default, but whilst trying to get this working found that the XBOX is pingable when searching for a PC connection, just search for a PC connection from your XBOX and leave this window up, even if it finds nothing. The on your PC just ping the IP address for the XBOX, you can get this address by checking the Network settings on the XBOX.
Another tip is to connect the XBOX directly to your PC, a straight or cross over cable will work, then try the Media Center setup, this might not work again due to the MTU size issue.
I got this working last night and it really is pretty cool, if you need any help at all, then I would be happy to try and help out, you can contact me via my e-mail :-

PLZZZ HELP ME
This worked for me after hours of firewall red herrings.
Step 1: Force the XBox to disconnect.
Step 2: Search for available networks. When it finds the wireless network, connect as usual.
Step 3: Go through the steps to add an extender. Interestingly, I got a new extender ID.
My Friend, thank you!! The easiest solution jejeje
Thanks a lot. Cannot believe how silly it was
