When the iPhone came out, I was stoked, I picked one up (shortly after the lines subsided). When the 3G came out, again, I was stoked, the GPS feature made it a very useful accessory for me to have. The one problem with both of these was the fact that they were incompatible with the Nike+ running system. Nike+ is the one thing that makes me want to workout. Without some tech stuff or gadgetry involved, working out just isn’t fun for me, so I just don’t do it.

Now with all of the new iPhone 3GS press releases and announcements, I’ve learned that the iPhone 3.0 OS will support Nike+, but it sounds like it will only be available on the iPhone 3GS. Does this mean that I’m going to have to shell out a couple hundred bucks to get a brand new iPhone even though my iPhone 3G is only 6 months old? What a waste! Why wouldn’t you be able to use the Nike+ system with the iPhone 3G? It doesn’t make any sense.

I am waiting for someone smarter than me to find a cheat and make thier own. The required shoe with the place to insert the pod has already been broken. I have read that it is just blue tooth. Someone break this. Everyone wants it and if apple doesn’t want to give it to us lets take it.

  • Hi Julie -

I’m glad to hear that someone is on the same page as me, however, I just read somewhere that Nike+ hasn’t been supported on previous versions of the iPhone because the iPhone has not ever had the capability to run applications in the backround. i.e. when you receive a phone call, it would interrupt your workout, thus requiring you to have to start it over. With the new iPhone 3G S, Nike+ will be able to continue running in the backround allowing your workout to continue even if you receive a call and pick it up.

I’d still like to see Nike+ ported to the iPhone 3G and the original iPhone. I wouldn’t have a problem switching my phone to Airplane Mode prior to starting a run, I think that’d solve the problem, but I guess Apple doesn’t want to support it.

Until they do, or until I buy a new iPhone 3G S, I guess I’ll just keep using my iPod Nano.
